Somalia has had a rich history, in which many travesties have taken place. But I’m sure both of us can agree that a big part of Somalia’s identity is its fight for independence. The struggle took support and educated leaders, but Somalia was up for the challenge.

Somalia was colonized by two European countries named Italy and Britain. Some of the Somali people, mostly southerners, enjoyed the economic prosperity and developed leadership that Italy offered to Somalia. Others just respected Britain and believed they should lead Somalia (The Horn of Africa: From War to Peace). Somalia truly started to fight for independence in 1945 when Britain Military released its tight grip on Somalia and tried to introduce democracy to the country. Multiple political parties started by Somalia born people sprang up into existence. Soon after in 1959 Somalia was finally granted independence by the United Nations (A Dictionary of World History)

The Somalis fight for independence was not as heated as many other African countries. Actually the Postdam Conference, A league of the worlds major powers that were attempting to establish post war order, was just unsure what to do with Somalia. Either leave Britain to keep main power in Somalia, Return all power to Italy, or grant Somalia independence (Encyclopedia Britannica). This question was a hot topic throughout Somalia. The people pushing for Somali independence the most heavily were definitely the rural citizens of Somalia.

Somalia and its past European colonizers are on good terms. Italians
government style and leadership still affects Somalia to this day. The Somali people’s predominant language has always been Somali. All Somali people were at least indirectly affected by the gain of independence in Somalia. Because now Somalia ran its own government and voted on its own laws.
